Player Development and Education

Can golf get any more complicated, frustrating, and difficult to play?  It can if you don't learn the value of good golf education.  Golf is more than just grooving the right swing and picking the right club! Learning the rules, etiquette, how to play at the right speed, what to wear, how to make a tee time, and how to find a foursome can be an overwhelming task.

So how do you go about learning the game and still enjoy it?  EWGA South Jersey is solidly founded on the principles of offering beginners and veteran golfers opportunities to further their learning in a fun and positive atmosphere.   What better way to learn than amongst friends and colleagues.  Whether you choose to take a private or a group lesson, attend a class on etiquette, or a lunch and learn session on Handicaps and rules we have the education opportunity that will fit your time, taste and budget!

Learning to play golf is a lengthy process that is made better if you have good teachers and South Jersey has some of the best!  See our calendar for the next learning opportunity.

Etiquette

OK girls.  I know we all love that doggie at the turn.  Here are a few rules of etiquette that are quite useful.

(GolfDigest, August 2005, p. 60)

Rule 14:  It’s OK to grab a quick hot dog, but keep playing.  Do not stop for lunch.

Rule 15:  Don’t try to jump in front of a group that stopped at the turn to pick up that hot dog.

Rules

Some basic rules to remember:

You get no relief from out-of-bounds posts or fences.

Before you swing, do not break branches, uproot shrubs or remove anything fixed.  However, if something is loose, remove it (except in a hazard).

If your stance, swing or ball is impeded by a cart path, find the nearest point of relief no closer to the hole that puts you completely in the clear of the cart path. Mark that spot and take a free drop within one club-length of that spot.  Remember that the nearest point of relief may be in a more awkward and less appealing spot.  It may even be in a hazard!  Choose wisely!

Situation of the Month

YOU MAKE THE CALL, from Golf for Women, March/April edition.

A PLAYER REPLACES HER BALL ON THE PUTTING GREEN BUT LEAVES THE COIN MARKING THE BALL’S POSITION.  A BIG GUST OF WIND MOVES THE BALL A COUPLE OF FEET FARTHER FROM THE HOLE.  WHAT IS THE RULING?  The player must play the ball from its new location.  Wind is not an outside agency; therefore, the player must accept the consequences.  (Rule 20-4 and Decision 20-4/1).
